How should you react to being tailgated?

Have you ever been tailgated by another car? It's a seriously stressful (and annoying) situation to find yourself in. Being tailgated greatly increases your chances of getting into a car accident (and it's not even your fault, which makes it worse). Being rear-ended by a careless or aggressive driver is the last thing you need, so our Charlotte Toyota body shop is here with suggestions on how to avoid this type of car accident and get out of a situation where you're being tailgated.

Charlotte Toyota body shop tips

Five tips for when you're being tailgated

Tip #1: Don't feel like you have to speed up for them. You don't - they shouldn't be tailgating you and putting you and your passengers in a dangerous situation. If you're going the speed limit, then you're in your right as these limits are set to keep everyone safe on the road. Don't push yourself to drive faster if you're not comfortable. However, it's commonly known that the left lane is used for passing so if you're going under the speed limit or just cruising in it, it's only fair that you get out of the way of people who want to pass.

Tip #2: Stay calm. It's easy to panic when you're being tailgated - after all, you're a lot more likely to get into a car accident when someone is following your N Charlotte Toyota too closely. Keep your cool and make the right moves to get out of their way instead of also driving aggressively; this will just make the situation worse.

Tip #3: Slowly press your brakes. It's tempting to brake check the person who's tailgating you (when you slam on your brakes to scare them off). However, it's also dangerous and could lead to them slamming into the back of you. Your best bet is to slowly, gently tap your brakes. Sometimes people tailgate without even meaning to or without realizing, and a little flash of brake lights could remind them that they need to back off and give you space.

Tip #4: Use your turn signals to get out of the way. If flashing your brake lights at them doesn't help, then it's time to get out of the way. Use your turn signals to indicate your movements and slowly get into the next lane so the tailgater can pass. Don't jerk your wheel or slam on your brakes.

Tip #5: Don't get angry. We know that it's easier said than done, but don't get angry and cause a scene as the person passes you. Making rude gestures or yelling can just inflame the situation more. It takes your attention off the road, and it can also lead to road rage on their part... you just never know. Better safe than sorry, so keep your cool and focus on the road ahead.
