Toyota of N Charlotte's guide to your car suspension

Do you know what your car suspension really does for your vehicle every time you hit the road? This intricate system is an extremely important part of your performance - without it, your car would literally shake apart over time. Our Charlotte auto service techs are here to explain what your car suspension is, what it's made of, and how to troubleshoot it.

What is your car suspension composed of?

Let's talk about what your suspension is made of, first. It's composed of a multitude of parts, including:

Springs, which let your car bounce over irregularities in the road. They also help to keep your car at its predetermined height, as well as support any extra weight in the car (like if you're hauling something heavy).

Dampers, which absorb the kinetic energy from the springs so they don't just keep bouncing endlessly while you drive. There are three types of dampers: struts, shocks, and anti-sway bars.

  • Shock absorbers are typically mounted next to the springs and their job is to convert that aforementioned kinetic energy into thermal energy, which then gets dissipated in hydraulic fluid

  • Struts are similar to shock absorbers, but they're mounted inside of the coil spring instead of near it.

  • Anti-sway bars are rods that attach opposing sides of a car suspension to provide additional stability

Your car suspension has two main functions - here's what our Charlotte auto service techs have to say about it.

What exactly does your car suspension do?

Function #1: It makes sure that your car tires retain contact with the road. As you drive - especially at high speeds or on bumpy surfaces - your tires bounce. Your car suspension hooks up to your axles and wheels and presses down, ensuring that your tires maintain contact with the road (and that the springs and dampers take on the bouncing).

Function #2: It absorbs all the vibrations from the road. As we said, without car suspension, your N Charlotte Toyota would eventually just shake apart from all the vibrating. Suspension absorbs the vibrations and gets rid of them via the springs and dampers.

How to troubleshoot your car suspension

Now that you know what your car suspension does and what it's made of, our Charlotte car service techs can give you a better idea of how to troubleshoot it. Here's a list of signs they recommend looking out for:

  • Your car seems like it's tipping to one side when you make a turn

  • You notice that it dips down when you brake, or dips back when you accelerate

  • Steering has become more difficult or your car feels like it's pulling to one side

  • You hear clunking noises when you go over bumps

  • Your N Charlotte Toyota feels unstable at highway speeds

  • You can see that one side of your car is sitting lower when it's in park

  • Your tires are wearing unevenly

If you notice any of the above, it's time to head to the Toyota of N Charlotte auto service center. You can call ahead of time to make an appointment at (704) 659-2025, schedule online, or visit us at 13429 Statesville Road, just off I-77 at exit 23 in Huntersville.
