Nothing is worse than driving home and seeing your Toyota car going up in a cloud of smoke. When your car overheats it can be a huge inconvenience. This could also mean that an expensive auto repair could be needed. Luckily, our Charlotte Toyota auto service technicians can fix your car in no time! However, there are some signs to spot before your engine is too far gone. That’s why Toyota of N Charlotte is here with the best tips on what to do if your car overheats.
But first, let’s get some easy signs you can spot when your Toyota car overheats before it gets too expensive to fix.
The temperature gauge on the dashboard goes into the “H” or it moves into the red section of the Charlotte Toyota temperature gauge.
A huge telltale sign is if you see smoke coming out of your hood.
If you smell some strange smells (sweet smell) coming from under the hood, then this could be a sign that your car coolant is leaking. On the other hand, an oil leak will have a nasty, burnt odor.
Steps to take if your car overheats
Step #1 Turn the heater on.
Turning the heater on when your car overheats might seem counterproductive. However, it’s actually really good to do! This can take some of the smoke away from the Charlotte Toyota engine, and bring it into the cabin. You’ll know this method worked if the temperature gauge goes back to normal.
Step #2 Pull over.
Toyota of N Charlotte suggests pulling over if you still see smoke coming from your hood. You don’t want to make the problem worse than it already is by continuing to drive.
Step #3 Stay patient.
We know this is a frustrating issue, but you should stay patient and calm. Your first instinct might be to pop open the hood and see what’s going on. However, just wait about 15 minutes before you do this. If you don’t wait a big cloud of smoke could blast your face from your Charlotte Toyota engine.
Step #4 Add more car coolant.
If your car overheats, you can also add a combination of half car coolant and half water to try to cool it down. Remember to wear gloves and grab the cap with a towel to turn the knob. However, if all else fails, our auto service technicians will be happy to help you!
Step #5 Drive to a gas station.
If all else fails, then drive yourself to the nearest gas station or (Toyota of N Charlotte) to have an auto repair. We’ll be more than happy to get your car back on the road again!
