When it's time to change your engine oil, it's critical to get that oil change on your busy schedule. Oil is responsible for keeping your car's engine cool and lubricated and when it gets too dirty or there's not enough of it, you can run into huge performance issues and expensive repairs. However, did you know that it's also critical to use the right TYPE of engine oil for your car?
Most people don't even realize that there are different types of car engine oil, but our Charlotte auto service technicians are here to explain each of them so you can better decide which one is right for your ride.
Type 1: Synthetic
Synthetic is one of the more popular types of engine oil at this point in time. Although it's a bit more costly that conventional oil, it actually has the potential to last a lot longer. This means you'll have a lot more time in between oil changes - we're talking 7,500 to 10,000 miles instead of the traditional 3,000 - 5,000. Synthetic motor oils also hold up a lot better in extreme temperatures and because it's chemically engineered, it has fewer impurities in it. This means a cleaner performance for your engine.
Type 2: Conventional
Conventional motor oil has been around for a long time and many drivers still swear by it. It doesn't last quite as long as synthetic oil, but it is cheaper, so if you're on a budget it may be the right choice for you. Quick tips on this type of engine oil - it comes in different viscosities. Viscosity means a fluid's resistance to flow, so if you live in a warmer climate you'll want higher viscosity (like 10W - 30W) and if you live in a cooler climate you'll want lower viscosity (like 0W - 5W).
Type 3: High Mileage
Do you have a golden oldie out in the driveway? For cars with high mileage, our Charlotte auto service techs recommend opting for a high mileage oil. This particular type of engine oil uses a special blend of additives and a very specific viscosity to lend maximum performance to cars that have been out on the road for a while.
Type 4: Synthetic Blend
Synthetic blend oil is just what it sounds like - a blend of synthetic and conventional motor oil. It's kind of the best of both worlds - you'll get 5,000 miles in between oil changes, a cheaper price tag, better performance in extreme temperatures, and a great performance. It's a win-win!
