What can you do about car paint oxidization?

If you park your car outside, you know just how punishing the elements can be (especially the sun). Parking your N Charlotte Toyota solely outside can lead to car paint damage over time, and one of the biggest issues we see in this arena is car paint oxidization. This is when the persistent sun exposure starts to leech oil from the paint, resulting in a finish that's dull, rough to the touch, and eventually, colorless.

And unfortunately, car paint oxidization is pretty permanent, especially if your car doesn't have a clear coat on it. However, there is a way to try to restore your car paint to its former glory, and our Charlotte Toyota Collision Center techs are here to help.

First things first - your best bet when it comes to dealing with car paint oxidization is to try and avoid it altogether. Here are three easy ways to fend off this type of car paint damage:

  • Park under cover. A garage is best, but a covered parking spot or even some trees that provide shade can help ward off damaging UV rays from the sun and subsequent car paint oxidization.

  • Buy a car cover. No way to avoid parking outside and in the sun? Consider buying a car cover. This will shield your car from direct sunlight and help protect and preserve your paint job for years to come.

  • Wax your car. Apply a quality wax every other month or so to give your car extra protection. Wax fends off UV rays, moisture, and other elements that can make your N Charlotte Toyota look worse for the wear.

However, if the damage has been done, then it's time to break out the DIY supplies and try to restore your car (unless you just want the Toyota of N Charlotte body shop to take a crack at it).

  • First, gather your tools and supplies. You'll need car wash supplies, as well as an electric buffer, rubbing compound, car polish, and car wax.

  • Wash your car thoroughly and dry it. Try to find a shady spot to work in - direct sunlight doesn't play well with car polish and wax.

  • Apply rubbing compound to the area you want to restore. Using the lowest speed setting and the softest pad, use the electric buffer to buff the compound in. If you don't see results after a few minutes, you can try a higher speed or a more abrasive pad.

  • Next, apply car polish using the same method to bring your car to a high shine.

  • Finally, finish off with two coats of quality wax. Our Charlotte Toyota parts store can help you choose the right one!
