Driving in high winds can be a challenge for even the most experienced driver. And, with hurricane season in full swing, now is the time to be prepared ahead of time. At Toyota of N Charlotte, we know a thing or two of how to stay safe when it's windy. Storms that create a lot of wind can make it dangerous during your commute to work or drop the kids off at daycare, and cause objects to come flying off your Toyota car or the car in front of you. Luckily, we have some Charlotte Toyota tips for you to stay safe on the road!
Tip #1 Watch the weather.
It’s always best to check the weather before setting out for your commute to work. By checking the weather, you can stay prepared and avoid heavy rain and high winds by leaving earlier or a little later. However, if you do get caught in the middle of some really high winds, then just pull over somewhere safe that you can ride out the storm. When the storm lets up, just get back on the road.

Tip #2 Keep your distance.
Another Charlotte Toyota tip to stay safe is to keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you. It’s best practice to leave more space in front of you than you typically would in “normal” weather. By keeping a safe distance, you can save yourself some reaction time by swerving out of the way if an object comes flying off someone’s car in front of you. If you do have damage to your car, then you can always bring it to our Charlotte Toyota auto service technicians!
Tip #3 Go the speed limit.
We can’t stress this Charlotte Toyota tip enough. You should always go the speed limit, and in some cases, even less than the number that is posted. If you’re speeding, then this could cause a car accident and you'll have to book an appointment with our auto service technicians!
Tip #4 Remove exterior items on your Toyota car.
If you see on the weather that there will be high winds in the area, then remove any bike racks, luggage, and any kayaks that might be on top of your Toyota car. This is super important because you could cause damage to the car behind you if something flies off your car.
Tip #5 Keep both hands on your steering wheel.
One of the best Charlotte Toyota tips is to keep both hands on your steering wheel at all times! Be sure to put your phone away when driving in high winds! You want to be able to have a quick reaction if you need to pull over or swerve due to objects flying around.
